Bhutan is a unique country located on the Himalayan ranges surrounded by two mighty countries, China in the north, west, east and India in the south. People of Bhutan are called Drukpas and the country is called Druk after the blessing of the Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal in 17th century.
During that time, Bhutan was ruled by local leaders and were isolated from each other by huge mountain ranges in northern parts and hot and wet forest in the south.
Zhabdrung's visit to Bhutan was prophesied by Guru Rinpoche in 746 A.D. Zhabdrung unified the country and then formalized Dzongkha :"language spoken in the dzong to communicate". Even though there exits many other languages like sharchop, mandep, Lhotshamkha etc Zhamdrung had chosen Dzongkha as the official language to be spoken by the people of Bhutan to communicate. If we take the language to our heart, it can be the blessing because the lung to speak the language was initiated by Zhabdrung himself.
later many interpreters said that Dzongkha was totally copied from Tibetean language but according to the study done by Phendey Lekshey Wangchuk, Program officer in Dzongkha Development Commission, he said that the terms which are not in tibetean language are used and spoken in our country since the time of Zhabdrung. That solely proves that Dzongkha was not a prioritized from any language.
with change in time, and rapid modernization, speaking dzongkha has become a death culture in Bhutan. If one can not communicate in English, they are considered as an uneducated or low level people. Even a clerk in a office response to a new person would be" may i help you".
When going into the deeper, it could mean two thing, weather they do not really know how to speak dzongkha or they feel shame to speak dzongkha. Bhutanese students study dzongkha after graduating from the college. They can write a good essay in English but they can not write their name in Dzongkha.
BIG QUESTION TO WORRY FRIENDS!!!!!!!!!!!!
